June 2012Andrew Schwartz

In May, Japan awarded UCSF School of Nursing Professor Emeritus William L. Holzemer with its Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for his outstanding contributions over the past 25 years to the development of nursing science and the education of nursing professionals in Japan. Established in 1875, the Order of the Rising Sun is given to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service to the community and contributions to US-Japanese relations. In a news release published on the Rutgers University website, Holzemer called the award “a great and humbling honor.”

An internationally recognized expert in academic nursing and HIV/AIDS care, Holzemer left UCSF to become dean of the College of Nursing at Rutgers University in 2009.
