Sandy Staveski Honored for Excellence in Cardiovascular Nursing

Sandy Staveski, assistant professor in Family Health Care Nursing, is the recipient of the 2020 Patricia Hickey Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Nursing, honoring her contributions to nursing and the field of pediatric cardiovascular health care.

The award is the highest honor for nurses in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS), and recognizes a nurse who has made exceptional contributions in pediatric cardiac nursing through excellence in patient care, research or leadership and who has furthered the mission and vision of the PCICS. As an award winner, Staveski will deliver a presentation at the PCICS 2020 International Meeting this December.

Elizabeth Gatewood, Miranda Surjadi Inducted Into Debas Academy of Medical Educators

Elizabeth Gatewood, Miranda Surjadi Elizabeth Gatewood, associate professor in Family Health Care Nursing, and Miranda Surjadi, associate professor in Community Health Systems, have been selected as new members of the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.

Members demonstrate excellence in direct teaching of learners and/or faculty development for teachers/educators. In addition, they exhibit outstanding accomplishment in one or more of these additional areas of health professions education activity: mentoring and advising; curriculum development, instructional design and technology; educational leadership; and learner assessment.

Andrew Penn Co-Authors Statement Opposing Police Use of Ketamine

Andrew Penn An online professional statement from medical and psychiatric professionals protesting the use of ketamine by law enforcement in the death of Elijah McClain was co-authored by Andrew Penn, associate professor in Community Health Systems, and was signed by over 100 clinicians. It was cited in an Aug. 6 article in Lucid News.

McClain, who was Black, was injected with a large dose of ketamine while in the custody of the Aurora, CO police in 2019 and later died. The statement questions the intersections of racism and the entangling of medical professionals with law enforcement, and calls for stricter guidelines on the use of chemical restraints.

Honoring Teaching Excellence

The award acknowledges an individual’s skill and dedication to interprofessional teaching, and is given by the UCSF Program for Interprofessional Practice and Education and the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. See the full list of this year’s recipients.

Andrew Penn, associate professor in Community Health Systems, received The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators annual Excellence in Teaching Award. The peer-nominated award is given to “unsung heroes” who demonstrate daily their dedication to education and teach in a manner that creates an encouraging, intellectually stimulating environment that promotes critical thinking and learning.

Monica McLemore Monica McLemore, associate professor in Family Health Care Nursing, was featured in an article in the September issue of the American Journal of Nursing, in which she shared her views on how nurses can address systemic racism during COVID-19, steps they can take in the workplace, and more. Read the article.



Victoria Keeton Honored With Edna Stilwell Award

Victoria Keeton, professor in Family Health Care Nursing, was honored with the Edna Stilwell Writing Award from The Journal of Gerontological Victoria Keeton Nursing for her Sept. 1 article “Overburdened and Underprepared: Medical/Nursing Task Performance Among Informal Caregivers in the United States.”

Linda Franck Becomes Co-Director of ACTIONS

Linda Franck, professor in Family Health Care Nursing, will join ACTIONS Founding Director Monica McLemore as co-director of the program. Linda Franck

ACTIONS (Abortion Care Training Incubator for Outstanding Nurse Scholars program) is a fellowship that seeks to connect, mentor and support pre-and postdoctoral scholars looking to pursue a PhD at SON.

Van Park Organizes Vietnamese Caregiver Conference

Van Park, associate professor in Community Health Systems, organized an annual Vietnamese Caregiver Conference for families and friends caring for a loved Van Park one. The conference, which was conducted in Vietnamese, was held virtually this year with the first session on Sept. 17 and the second on Sept. 26. Topics included Health Care & COVID-19; Crisis Supportive Services During COVID-19; Medi-Cal and Medicare Changes; and Advanced Directives. See the fliers for more details.

Schola Matovu Receives Early Career Global Health Award

Schola Matovu Schola Matovu, assistant professor in Physiological Nursing and a graduate of our doctoral program, joins the Faculty Affiliate Program at the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences. In addition, she is the first affiliate to be recognized by her FAP peers as the inaugural recipient of the Early Career Global Health Award.

Laura Wagner Joins New Editorial Board

Laura Wagner, associate professor in Community Health Systems, joins the inaugural editorial board of the Journal of First- Laura Wagner Generation Student Success, a new publication managed by the national nonprofit Center for First-Generation Student Success. The journal, which is slated to release its first issue in April 2021, seeks to publish practice and research articles.
