Jerry John Nutor Honored for Leadership

Jerry John Nutor  Jerry John Nutor, assistant professor in Family Health Care Nursing, will receive the Consortium of Universities for Global Health Faculty Leader Award in recognition of his continued work in global health, and implementing and sustaining the annual Africa Interdisciplinary Health Conference.



Soo-Jeong Lee Recognized With Leadership Award 

Soo-Jeong Lee, associate professor in Community Health Systems, has been honored with the 2021 Medique Unique Leadership Award from the California State Association of Occupational Soo-Jeong Lee Health Nurses. Given annually since 1991, the award recognizes exemplary leadership and service in occupational health.

Anita Ho Named Hastings Center Fellow

Anita Ho Anita Ho, associate professor in the Institute for Health & Aging, has been elected a fellow of The Hastings Center, joining over 200 individuals whose work has informed scholarship and public understanding of complex ethical issues in health, health care, science and technology. Ho is one of 24 new fellows joining the center. Read the announcement.


School of Nursing Researchers Receive Funding

Leading projects ranging from tobacco use cessation to music's impact on brain function, School of Nursing researchers received Year 1 funding to conduct these innovative projects:Clockwise, from top left, Beth Phoenix, Lauren Hunt, Soo-Jeong Lee, Susan Chapman and Barbara Koenig

  • Beth Phoenix, professor in Community Health Systems, received $399,057 from the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration for her project, "Expanding Partnerships for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Training."
  • Lauren Hunt, assistant professor in Physiological Nursing, received $243,000 in year 1 funding for her project, "Hospice Use in Older Adults With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: Patterns, Policies, and Caregiver Experiences."
  • Soo-Jeong Lee, associate professor in Community Health Systems, received $242,250 in year 1 funding for her project, "Impact of COVID-19 on Disinfectant Exposure and Associated Health Effects."
  • Susan Chapman, professor in Social Behavioral Sciences (SBS), received $183,135 from the National Cancer Registrars Association, for her project, "Workload Study for Hospital-Based Cancer Registries and Understanding Future Trends."
  • Barbara Koenig, professor emerita in the Institute for Health & Aging (IHA), received $107,848 from UC Santa Cruz for her project, "ELSI Administrative Supplement - Center for Human Reference Genome Diversity."

Van Park Among COVID-19 Event Panelists

Van Park Van Park, professor in Community Health Systems, was among the guest speakers at the panel discussion “COVID-19 Two Years Later: The Impact on Research and Public Health in Diverse Communities,” hosted by the National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. Four Faculty Awarded Chancellor Funds

Congratulations to these recipients of the second round of Faculty Learning and Development Fund through the 2021 Chancellor's Fund: Carrie Evans, Elizabeth Gatewood, Tracy Kuo Lin, Sandra Staveski

The funds support a range of development activities, including training to improve teaching or professional skills; leadership development; conferences and more.

Sandra Weiss Speaks on Scientific Panel, Leads International Webinar

Sandra Weiss Sandra Weiss, professor in Community Health Systems, spoke on "Mastering Multi-Site Research" as part of a scientific panel at the 2021 Conference of the National Network of Depression Centers: Transforming Science, Transforming Society.

In addition, Weiss led an international webinar in November sponsored by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Portugal. The webinar was titled "Intergenerational Transmission of Depression and Mood Disorders: Significance of Prenatal and Postnatal Environments."

Sandra Domeracki Presents at AAOHN Sandra Domeracki

Sandra Domeracki, associate professor in Community Health Systems, delivered the presentation “Hearing Conservation” at a Nov. 9, 2021 virtual NP Boot Camp that was organized by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses.

Midwifery Mentoring and Belonging Program Captures Funding Award

Kim Dau, Kristina Fortes, Linda Franck The UCSF Midwifery Mentoring and Belonging Program has been awarded $850,000 over two years from the California Health Care Foundation and the Yellow Chair Foundation to expand the program to include California State University Fullerton, as well as program evaluation and sustainability planning. 

The program pairs BIPOC midwifery students with non-faculty BIPOC midwife mentors, with a focus on supporting mentoring skill development and networking. The program team members are Kim DauKristina Fortes, Linda Franck, Maritza Franqui, Asmara Gebre, Ladi Khoddam-Khorasani, Renee Mehra, Naledi Saul, Angela Sojobi and Marshawna Sparks.

SAFERR Program Secures Grant Extension to Train More Experts

The Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Recruitment and Retention (SAFERR) program, which is designed to strengthen care for survivors of sexual assault, has secured a grant extension through the end of Sarah Nathan June. SAFERR is led by Sarah Nathan, assistant professor in Family Health Care Nursing, and Jeremy Wong, project policy analyst. 

The grant enables the program to continue offering training to advanced practice nurses, RNs, physician assistants, and physicians. The program secured its initial grant in 2018 and has trained 103 people over the past three years. 

December Preceptor: Janet Godfrey

Janet Godfrey The December 2021 Preceptor of the Month is Janet Godfrey, RN, NNP, PNP-AC, a 2014 graduate of SON's Master of Science program in the neonatal nurse practitioner specialty. She practices at Natividad, and is committed to providing outstanding care to patients and supporting the development of future NNPs through precepting. January Preceptor: Piera Wong Piera Wong

The January 2022 Preceptor of the Month is Piera Wong, MS, RN, AOCNS, an oncology clinical nurse specialist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
